What you see pictured here is not actually a Chinese traffic jam, but my sinus passages at the moment. I had a fever Monday (gone now) and a sore throat yesterday, and now congestion today. I’m heading up to Oshkosh Friday come hell or high water and I’d really like to get things cleared up before then. What tips or tricks do you have?
I’ve been trying to hydrate well and getting plenty of rest as well as taking ibuprofen pretty often, but I could use a boost.

A steamy hot shower to loosen those nasal passages might be the first step. Some coffee for a boost, orange juice for vitamin c and your preferred decongestant. I’ve never used one of those neti pots but I hear they flush out the nose pretty well.

Oh man I feel for you. I have these symptoms way too often. Yeah, drinking a lot helps, warm beverages for the throat (tea with honey is heinous but works pretty well), and these small salty-water injections you should be able to buy at a local pharmacy (at least you can here, don’t know about the US) that helps clear the nose a bit.
Best of luck!

Grab some of those Menthol-Eucalyptus cough drops, even the ones from the Dollar Store are fine - they are temporary relief as they won’t get rid of whatever is causing it, but the menthol has the effect of at least opening your sinuses temporarily, at least for me!
They can help you clear out your sinuses a bit more easily to the point you may be able to breath through them for awhile...

I neti pot it from time to time. Cheap and worth a try. They sell them everywhere for about 10-15 bucks and that gets you a ton and the “pot”.

A long hot shower (so you get the sauna feel), tea with some bourbon or cognac and honey and maybe something you can spray into your nose to help get rid of the goo

Mucinex DM
Advil
Claritin
Neti Pot
All of the above (I can't vouch for Neti pot, it's more of a Guantanamo Bay thing, but people love it). I don't believe there are interactions between those drugs, but I could be wrong. Mucinex is some of the best stuff ever — decongestant AND expectorant in one.

Also, EXPERT LEVEL: Take the max dosage of Sudafed during your visit. Hydrate like crazy and don't be surprised if you forget to sleep.

Sudafed, my friend. That stuff will reduce the swelling in your sinuses in no time flat and will make you feel SOOOO much better. You gotta get the real stuff, though — the kind with pseudoephedrine. It’s OTC, but still sold behind the pharmacy counter because of federal laws aimed at curbing meth production.
The only reason I say that is because there’s another kind that looks like Sudafed, and is available on regular store shelves but has a different ingredient, and it just doesn’t work at all.
I prefer the Sudafed 12 hour (or the store brand generic version). Two pills a day and you’re good.
If you’re on high blood pressure medication, though, I’d ask your doctor or pharmacist first, as pseudoephedrine can raise blood pressure a little bit.
Also, stay hydrated. I know it can be hard to keep drinking things when your throat hurts, but half the reason cold symptoms feel so bad is because you’re not hydrated enough.
Here’s an herbal tea recipe my mom always used to make when I’d get sick as a kid:
-1 small packet of anise seeds. (Not star anise, just regular anise. Try looking in the Mexican spice section of your grocery store).
-2-4 Mexican cinnamon sticks (not American. Mexican sticks are a little stronger).
-honey to taste
Bring a small saucepan filled with water to a boil. Toss in the entire packet of seeds and the sticks. Boil for 5-10 minutes. Strain some of the tea into a mug, and add honey to your preference. Sip while still hot. Feel better. :)

Thanks Xyl0. I should probably just take some sudafed (autocorrect wanted to write ‘sausages’, wouldn’t that be nice) but I hate the way it makes me feel. I get all jittery when I’m on that stuff.

Well if it’s a real infection you should probably go to the doctor and get some antibotics. I don’t mess with these things if they go over a couple of days for me it’s usually an infection and I have to do a round of Amoxicillin. My wife was down two weeks with a sever sinus infection, she was not a happy camper.

Couple people here already mentioned peppers, and I agree with them.
Jalapennnnnnno peppers have a crap ton of vitamin A and C. Also, the capsaisin (burninating stuff) is an anti-inflammatory (iknorite?). You’ll also be sweating out your illness because fire in tummy, and eventually butt.

I always alternate drinking a glass of fresh orange juice and a glass of milk for a couple of days, putting some vitamins back into my body to help boost any recuperation.

Hope I’m not too late! I just had my eighth sinus surgery a few weeks ago, and I can say with some authority that I’ve tried almost everything available by any means in several countries. My specific condition is likely different from yours, but the symptoms seem to be the same: shitloads of uncomfortable congestion and painful inflammation. Here are a few ideas, some more extreme than others, that might help:
Nasal irrigation - If your congestion is severe, the Neti pot just won’t do shit. The squeeze bottle from Neilmed (honestly haven’t seen any generic brands) allows you to put some pressure behind the saline solution, and if anything should feel pretty good and give you some relief. Best case scenario, it flushes out whatever contaminants are actually causing you these issues.
Afrin nasal spray - Really the only topical nasal decongestant that has done anything for me. Certainly not a long-term solution, but may cause the swelling to go down for long enough that some better medicine can do its work. Only concern is Afrin addiction/rebound, wherein users allegedly find it to be extremely effective for several hours, but then find themselves worse-off after the effects subside. Personally, I’ve never experienced such a thing, but do your own research and proceed as you feel comfortable.
Budesonide, Albuterol, other nebulizer-inhaled steroid - If anyone you know has asthma, chances are they have these lying around. If you’re unfamiliar, the medication comes in small plastic tubes and is poured into what is basically a humidifier for the purpose of delivering the steroid to the bronchioles. You, on the other hand, would pour half the respule into each nostril and lie on your back for several minutes to let the steroid do its anti-inflammatory work on your sinuses! This is more adventurous.
Let me know if you have any questions; I know these aren’t exactly orthodox, but sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Besides, I’m sure everyone else took care of the usual stuff. Also, let me know if you want any more suggestions! I’ve spent about ten years doing all kinds of experimenting with different regimens, and its rare I have the opportunity to impart what I’ve learned for others’ benefit. Good luck!

Thanks, although now I feel bad for you. I know a few people who have had chronic sinus issues and I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Don’t feel bad - I know as far as chronic medical issues go, it could be a hell of a lot worse. Feel better
